COMMUNITY CENTER ASSISTANT (CCA) 2024-2025

INTRODUCTION:

The Community Center is the first point of contact for many of Michigan Housing’s residential communities, a place where residents gather, meet peers, and ask for advice. It is also a central point for quality service, direction, resources, and assistance. A key responsibility of the Community Center Assistant (CCA) is to provide excellent quality service to residents, staff, and visitors in the residential community. As part of the Community Center team, the CCA supports building team partners, Housing and Student Life colleagues, and Michigan Learning Communities. 

TIME COMMITMENT:

Community Center Assistants are expected to meet the expectations and responsibilities of the position through the time commitments listed below. Michigan Housing recognizes that CCAs have other academic, personal, and professional time commitments as well. A Community Center Assistant’s Community Center Manager is available to discuss strategies to help balance the CCA responsibilities with other time commitments as needed.

The CCA can expect to work various hours across seven days each week to ensure that the Community Center is open to meet the community’s needs. This includes:

  • Working evening and weekend shifts, as well as during breaks, such as Fall Break, November Break, and Spring Break. 
    • The Community Centers at Northwood and Munger are twelve-month operations that remain open during all University breaks.
  • CCA may be scheduled for up to 12 hours a week but a minimum of 8 hours per week to work is required. Students should plan to work additional hours during training periods, as well as during Opening and Closing of the residential buildings, and as requested by their supervisor(s). ​
  • Actual hours may vary depending on the needs of the Community Center and the CCA’s availability. ​​It is important to note that CCAs cannot exceed 29 on-campus employment hours per week and International Students may work up to 20 on-campus employment hours per week while school is in session during the academic year (fall and winter semesters). CCAs are expected to attend a bi-weekly team meeting on designated Tuesday nights from 6:00-7:00 PM. 
  • This position is available for the Fall/Winter 2024-2025 terms as well as the Spring/Summer 2025 terms. Specific dates are in alignment with the University of Michigan academic calendars for 2024-2025 and 2025-2026
    • Please note that CCAs working for the Fall 2024 term will need to be scheduled starting August 12th, 2024 to support Michigan Housing move-in. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work in a manner that enhances an inclusive and supportive community by building rapport, respecting, and engaging with individuals through initiatives at the Community Center.
  • Create an approachable and service-oriented environment at the Community Center by prioritizing assisting residents and completing Community Center tasks. 
  • Maintain timely communication with the supervising CCM, fellow CCAs, and community members as needed.
  • Respond to telephone, and in-person inquiries in a timely manner with quality service skills, and follow-up to ensure resolution.
  • Learn effective operation of all University-owned equipment.
  • Sort and distribute mail and packages to students and staff per provided protocol.
  • Manage confidential information in a secure and sensitive manner.
  • Lock and secure the Community Center, as needed to ensure resident safety and the security of sensitive information and technology.
  • Follow proper procedures set by Housing Security Supervisors regarding the key management system in the distribution of keys/cards during room check-in/check-out and lock-outs.
  • Assist in the preparation and facilitation of Move-in and Move-out procedures.
  • Comply with University of Michigan and Michigan Housing policies and procedures. Model personal behavior that is consistent with the Michigan Housing mission, Community Living Standards, and Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Must attend all team staff meetings to be held on select Tuesdays from 6:00PM – 7:00PM.
    • Tuesday night meeting dates are subject to change due to events, such as academic calendar breaks. If this occurs, the CCA will receive prior notice from the CCM and the meeting must remain a priority.
  • Must attend and participate in all required virtual and in-person training such as August (Fall) and January (Winter) training. There may be additional Spring/Summer training for those working during the Spring and Summer terms. April or May training for 12 month communities. Please note: Attendance at all training sessions is required. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be enrolled as a graduate, undergraduate, or professional student at the University of Michigan 
  • Undergraduate Student Staff members must be enrolled and complete at least 8 credit hours each semester that they are appointed and graduate Student Staff members (Masters/Certificates) must be enrolled and complete at least 6 credit hours each semester they are appointed. Ph.D. candidate student staff members must provide proof of enrollment each semester they are appointed.
  • Must be in good standing with Student Life and the University. This includes upholding all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide, the Michigan Housing Community Living at Michigan, the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibility, and any other applicable University policies and procedures.
  • Must comply with all institutional, local, state, and federal laws and guidance.
  • Housing Student Conflict Resolution, Housing Student Employment Work Record, University Records, and the Office of Student Conflict Resolution records will be checked to determine if an applicant is eligible to be hired for a student position. Final position offers are contingent upon verification of background check.
  • Must adhere to all roles, responsibilities, and expectations for the entire duration of the appointment.
  • Due to the nature of their responsibilities, CCAs are not required to live in Michigan Housing.
  • CCAs will not be eligible to hold other Residence Education student positions during their CCA appointment, such as ResStaff (RA) positions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Be able to frequently move mail and packages of up to 50 pounds to and from various areas in the community, including shelving units, package storage locations, and mail rooms. Package storage locations may vary per building and during peak times.
  • Be able to accurately and timely log/check-in and check-out mail and packages and to retrieve various sized and shaped items for and from residents from various areas in the community.

SUPERVISION:

Direct supervision is provided by the Community Center Manager.

COMPENSATION:

Payrate is $15.00 per hour.
