Martha Cook House Board Advisor 2023-2024

INTRODUCTION

Martha Cook, a women’s residence hall at the University of Michigan, celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2015. It is a community rich with history, tradition, and pride. The House Board Advisor will focus on inclusive student leadership development in Martha Cook, advise the House Board (student group), and provide support to residents. They will learn about the Board of Governors who provide leadership to the cultural heritage of the buildings in collaboration with Michigan Housing  staff.

TIME COMMITMENT

The Martha Cook House Board Advisor is expected to meet the expectations and responsibilities of the position through the time commitments listed below. Michigan Housing recognizes that the House Board Advisor has other academic, personal, and professional time commitments as well. The House Board Advisor’s Hall Director is available to discuss strategies to help balance the House Board Advisor’s responsibilities with other time commitments as needed.

  • Approximately 10 hours per week.
  • Participate in weekly, or biweekly, supervisory meetings with the Hall Director depending on need.
  • Must be available to attend evening and weekend activities and meetings.
  • Must attend and participate at weekly House Board meetings (time to be determined with student leaders). 
  • Host set office hours in Martha Cook for 1:1 advising and support of House Board members. 
  • Must attend all training sessions during the academic year.
  • Commit to a nine month appointment which begins in August. Will be required to be present during which the community remains open to ensure resident and operational needs are met. 
  • Flexibility will be needed as priorities evolve.

The start date for this position is mid-August of 2023, and the end date is the beginning of May of 2024. Specific dates will be provided later in the Winter 2023 term. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Martha Cook House Board with a focus on community development, diversity, equity, and inclusion, restorative practices, and individual and collective leadership development.
  • Implement ongoing inclusive leadership training for the Martha Cook House Board with a focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Meet with the House Board members individually to provide support and coaching in meeting responsibilities to the community. 
  • Attend and participate in mandatory one-on-one meetings with the supervisor and weekly House Board meetings.
  • Attend and participate in large scale traditional events organized by the House Board and the Director of Alumnae Relations & Traditions.
  • Manage All House Meeting logistics and absences.
  • Coordinate House Board elections and review of House Board constitution.
  • Participate in August and January training, in addition to any in-service(s) throughout the semester, to learn critical topics to support residents and build relationships

ELIGIBILITY

  • Must be enrolled as a full time graduate student at the University of Michigan.
    • Preference is given to applicants residing in the Martha Cook community for the 2023-2024 academic year.
  • Appointment is for one (1) academic year and applicants must be able to commit to the full academic year – both Fall and Winter terms
  • Must be in good academic standing. Applicants are required to have a term and cumulative GPA listed below, without rounding, at the time of application in order to be considered for the position. Applicants who fail to meet the minimum GPA requirement will not be eligible to continue in the selection process. Applicants who are extended offers and fail to meet this requirement will no longer be eligible for a position. Incoming transfer students will be asked to present their transcripts from previously attended institutions.
    • All Graduate student positions will be expected to maintain a minimum 5.0 term and cumulative GPA if on an 8.0 scale, or a 5.5 term and cumulative GPA if on a 9.0 scale.
  • Must be in good standing with Student Life and the University. This includes upholding all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide, the University Housing Community Living at Michigan, the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibility, and any other applicable University policies and procedures.
  • Must comply with all institutional, local, state, and federal laws or guidance.
  • Housing Student Conflict Resolution, Housing Student Employment Work Record, University Records, and the Office of Student Conflict Resolution records will be checked to determine if an applicant is eligible to be hired for a student position. Final position offers are contingent upon verification of background check.
  • Must adhere to all roles, responsibilities, and expectations for the entire duration of the appointment including academic breaks where absence, including academic or personal leave, from these duties must be approved by the Hall Director.
  • Must be available to attend all of the training, prior to both Fall and Winter semesters. Training starts mid-August of 2023 for Fall and beginning of January 2024 for Winter. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) should consult with their academic department regarding eligibility to hold both appointments.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Previous experience as a member of Residence Staff (at Michigan or elsewhere) or experience with community living is desired. Graduate students with previous community engagement and programming experience are encouraged to apply.

SUPERVISION

The Martha Cook House Board Advisor will be directly supervised by the Martha Cook Hall Director. 

COMPENSATION

Compensation $16.00 / hour
