INTRODUCTION
Founded in 2024, the Michigan Sustainability Community (MSC) is a Michigan Learning Community at UM, located in Oxford Houses and sponsored by the College of Literature Science and the Arts, Program in the Environment, and the School for Environment and Sustainability. The MSC is dedicated to providing an inclusive and immersive environment for students to develop lifelong leadership in sustainability and environmental justice. The MSC welcomes students regardless of academic focus and aims to foster a culture of sustainability across all of campus. Towards this end, the MSC integrates sustainability programming and learning opportunities into the first-year college experience and functions as a community of engaged learners and sustainability leaders.
First-year students in the Michigan Sustainability Community take Environ245, “Campus as Sustainability Lab,” in the fall term and Environ 155, “MSC Seminar,” in the winter term. Other co-curricular activities include community meetings, social events, community dinners, and field trips. Michigan Sustainability Community Resident Advisors reside in Oxford Houses and are responsible for assisting students in the program and throughout the building. The Hall Director and the Michigan Sustainability Community Assistant Director supervise the Michigan Sustainability Community Resident Advisors.
